I've probably missed something though. If 'Play' on the day he travelled started @ 1100 how the heck did he manage to get there in time from Derby? Even getting from Southampton Parkway to the ground takes up time and expense.

As the match isn't until next week the use of a time machine probably made it easier for him to get there for the start.

    Lol.....I knew I'd missed something.

I reckon he'll waste the previous day travelling most of it, and then use a bit of false economy and fork out for a night @ Travel Lodge or summat.

It's not a huge amount of paper though, each ticket is probably about a gram, so 26grams, that's a fraction of the weight of paper used for a tabloid that nobody reads. Just make sure you drop them in your card recycling collection and the fibres will come back again and again as something new.

Oh, and don't think your e-ticket on your phone is totally free from having a carbon footprint, just think of how long it spends plugged into the wall chained to a huge power station, not to mention the non-renewable, non-recyclable resources used up in building it in the first place.

You have a point, but however you're actually weakening the argument by talking about CO2

One (music gig) ticket agency seems to have quantified things. It asks people not to print out the ticket, just use the confirmation email, and claims that printing uses 400 times more CO2 emission. They suggest for them to print and post tickets causes 1000 times more CO2.

Probably would make a bit more sense, however I would imagine the likes of Travelodge in the Southampton area would have noticed the cricket would be on and increased prices accordingly

I can't find the £159 fare at all.
Derby to Southampton Airport (not via London) is £94.10 (£62.10 with a
    railcard) off-peak or £194.40 anytime (£128.30 with a railcard).

    The journey:
Derby - Coventry: £20.60 (if going off-peak, it would be £19.70)
    Coventry - Banbury: £14.60
    Banbury - Oxford: £6.60
    Oxford - Basingstoke: £13.40
    Basingstoke - Southammpton Airport: £13.90

TOTAL: £69.10 (£68.20 if going off-peak all the way)

If he bought a railcard (assuming he is of the right restrictions to do
so), the journey would still have been cheaper than the £159 quoted:
    £69.10 + £30 (railcard) = £99.10.

Using the railcard on all fares would make the journey £62.10, thus it
would make sense to purchase a railcard, even if just using it on this
    trip.

The guy has chosen off-peak tickets from Coventry onwards, so it's safe to
presume he is leaving Derby early during a week day and leaving Coventry
    after 09:30.
  • The absurdity of our ticketing system works the other way round too. I recently bought a single from Cambridge to Bristol (via London) from Cross Country, and paid £14.85. That's very reasonable, I thought, in fact I bet it's less than the single to King's Cross! Sure enough Cambridge to King's Cross on the same train would have cost me £16.10, and 18.10 to Paddington. All of this of course outside peak time and with a senior railcard. But for all Cambridge to London travellers my advice is clear - check the Bristol fare first.
