Cheap divan bed bases - a false economy?

Hi folks, I'm looking to buy a super king divan bed. It need a to be a divan rather than a frame in order to keep the footprint as small as possible and also for storage capacity.
There's a huge range in prices, seemingly from a couple of hundred up to more than £1k.
I understand the importance of a good mattress and won't be scrimping on that, but the base itself? I'm thinking all it really needs to do is provide a stable platform for the mattress, which even the cheapest bases should be able to provide?
Am I right in this thinking or walking into a false economy trap?

Have you looked on eBay? I got a bed second hand recently and it is mint condition for a fraction of the new price. Seller was downsizing and it had been in their spare room so hardly used.
I'd suggest getting one with drawers btw if space is at a premium, divan beds are such a waste of good storage space!0 -
That £1k must be including mattress??
They are something like £250 on ebay.0 -
If you buy a budget one check the quality of the draws/runners as this is where savings are made by manafacturers, also if not a two piece base makes sure you can get it in the room ( up stairs etc. )0

I've just had a look at an expensive Tempur bed. Just emptied and removed it from a relative's house as no longer needed. They paid thousands for the bed and mattress together and yet the drawers are surprisingly poor quality. The front rails are wood with huge knots in (liable to snap as soon as any pressure is put on them) The drawers have flimsy bases - I was quite stunned - they are genuinely no better than a standard bed.0
