What's wrong with 45p/mile? When did it cost £4.50 to go 10 miles?

You're missing the point. It's not just the fuel cost, it's the total cost of motoring including depreciation.

Having said that I think the current rates are still fair and I've been using them for the past 25 years or so.

I am not missing the point. I understand depreciation, but 45p easily covers that. If you have an expensive car, then dont use it for work if you are too worried about depreciation.

I'm not sure there has really been that much inflation. I started work in 2010 and that summer petrol was over 140p per litre. It's around 130p now but has been significantly lower for most of the time in between. Other running costs have increased but fuel is still the biggest expense.

It's pretty stingy if you're running a bigger car - I used to use a VW Phaeton for work, and that'd just about break even, without depreciation.
Not an overly fancy or inefficient vehicle - just something suitable for the job.

The 330d which replaced isn't much better!

But as you'll see up the thread, it's been 45p/mile for much longer than that, I reckon to the time when petrol was below £1 per litre.

No, it went up around the time that petrol was £1.45/litre, back in 2011/2...

Are you sure? I remember claiming 45p per mile prior to 2010. (I got my company car in 2010 - prior to that any business miles were in my own car).
  • The government is moving towards finding more ways for businesses to be more energy-efficient. They're probably not raising them to discourage drivers to use their cars less!
