Agent wants to know salary for contract

I'm about to rent a flat in London and the agent wants a reference with my full annual salary.
My other flatmate has already given out the salary, but I'm not positive in giving out my salary.
Is it a required? Do I really have to tell them?

How else were you planning to persuade them that you can pay the rent?

They have the full reference from my employer. The only missing detail is the salary, because I don't like giving it out. Plus the other flatmate has provided it and it covers it all anyway

Well, you don't have to tell them. But they don't have to let you the house if you won't tell them.

Most estate agents and landlords will want this so you will struggle to rent in London if you won't declare it.

One of their calculations is that you can afford it.... they often don't tell you until it's "too late".

I viewed a place and I said I'd have it - and I thought it was all progressing when they hit me with that one! Bit of a bummer if I'd not been earning enough as they never asked before.

As a rule of thumb, it's 30x the monthly rent = salary they like to see.

    e.g. a flat at £600/month, they'd be looking for an £18,000/year salary.

Is it lawful? Or can I just state that I don't want to declare it and is there some law to back me up?

The other person already fulfills this. I mean, we work for two huge firms everybody knows and the salaries are well-known too..

What kind of law, and how would it 'back you up'?

It's their decision as to whether they let the house to you. If you are asking whether you can legally force through a rental agreement against the estate agents will, this answer is no, unfortunately not.

Yes, I wanted to know whether I could force them not to ask for my salary. Thanks.

Only if you don't want them to let to you.

It's not "so easy", I mean, it's the first time I see such a behavior (first time moving to London). Normally I would say that it is not the way to go, but then I've never rented in London, so

What are the reason for not doing it?

    Makes no sense at all.
