Error on Credit Report

Please can any one help!

In 2013 I lived at address in Reading, at the end of the year I moved back with my parents to Oxfordshire. I recently got my credit report and found a pay day loan had been taken out in my name at the address in Reading in 2016. But I have not lived at this address since 2013. I contacted the money lender and they said I needed to contact ClearScore. ClearScore said I needed to contact the pay day loan company. I have since got my Experian Report and and the loan is not showing on this report. So I contacted Experian and they said I needed to contact the money lender/ ClearScore credit reports. I am going around in circles and nobody is wanting to take ownership of the error.
Has any one had the same? and any ideas what I can do

Thanks

  • ClearScore's parent company is Equifax. In the first instance you need to contact Equifax to report the error on your file.

I would also check your file on Noddle (parent company TransUnion ex CallCredit) for any errors.

    Hi Jodie

If a payday loan has fraudulently been taken out in your name you need to report this to Action Fraud, the UK's fraud reporting service. They will usually give you a crime reference number. You then pass this on to the payday loan lender and ask them to investigate. If they accept the loan was taken out fraudulently they will not hold you liable for the debt.

You should also inform one of the credit reference agencies (I'd advise Experian given that the loan shows on Clearscore, which is one of their websites). They will work with you and the other credit reference agencies to restore your credit file to how it was prior to the fraud taking place.

You may want to consider adding a CIFAS marker to your credit file to reduce the chances of further fraud in the future. There's a small annual fee to do this. You can find more information on all of this here https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/factsheets/Pages/dealing-with-fraud/Dealing-with-fraud.aspx.

    Good luck with it all

The CRAs cannot remove incorrect information by themselves, only the company that posted the information can. I suspect that contacting Equifax (as well as the other CRAs) will give you the same response and refer you back to the loan company if the entry is confirmed on your file.

Personally, I would be more concerned that there may be a debt taken out in my name. Yes, it could simply be a matter of someone else's loan being put on your report by mistake, but it could also be more sinister with a loan taken out falsely in your name. I would be contacting the loan company again to confirm that there is not a debt in your name, as well as to request to remove any reference to it on your credit reports.
