No More Ply / Tile Backer board - anyone used it?

Options
Hi

Currently refitting our bathroom, we pulled up the old tiled floor which was tiled onto what looks like 6mm ply, which was screwed to the floorboards beneath.

I suspect that 6mm ply isn't strong enough to tile onto, so was going to replace with much thicker ply (12-18mm), problem being that this will add a substantial step into the bathroom, which I would like to avoid.

I came across a product called No More Ply, which is basically a tile backer board, from what I can gather it seems that a 6mm thick layer of this, or a similar tile backer board, will (allegedly) have the same strength as 12mm ply.

Googling doesn't help much as there are all sorts of different opinions on using ply vs backer board, vs ripping up and replacing the floorboards with 25mm ply (a job I'd rather not do).

Wondered if anyone had used this kind of stuff to tile on and whether the results were good?

Thanks :)

Presuming it's the same as Hardiebacker board, which is a 6mm concrete based board, it's brilliant for both floors and walls. It's strong and genuinely waterproof, the depth is good when you're considering thresholds to other rooms in the house and it will last past the first bathroom that's laid there.

I've used it over an old boarded floor and it worked really well. Much better than when I used ply elsewhere and doesn't lift the floor level by much. You glue & screw it down though so it will be a heck of a job if I ever need to remove it....
