Wall painted with paint that's gone off - smell

After moving recently, I rather hastily painted a bathroom wall (probably less than 2sq metres) with some old trade matt paint that had been left by the builders (3 years old). However, a few days on, the room absolute stinks of a sour mould smell and isn't shifting.

I've done some googling and came across the Crown/Valspar paint scandal, although this was Armstead.

Anyone the best solution how to overcome this? Try and remove the paint? Prime it and repaint with fresh paint?

I would ventilate and wait; the smell will probably disperse.

I've had this with brand new Crown paint. *sigh* My bedroom smelled like p**s.

Saw the same stuff as you online - including the suggestion that I would have to paint with a special sealant and then re-paint. However, I left mine and the smell very slowly disappeared - think it was a couple of months in total. Still less hassle than sealing and re-painting!

Quick update as I know it's always frustrating when you search and find that the thread never 'finished'

I ended up sanding down the affected walls with a manual sanding block, fairly easy but a messy job as the dust gets everywhere. Definitely wear ear and mouth/nose protection.

Once sanded, I dusted the wall down and then did two coats with Zinsser BIN primer. Beware, it's particularly watery compared to most paint so drips very easily.

This seems to have masked the smell so I'll repaint it with some fresh paint in the right colour.
