Goodbye AA, Hello Green Flag

After a quarter of a century of being with the AA, I finally gave them the boot.
£160 renewal as a Gold member.
£69 to join Green Flag with the equivalent cover

Got fed up with the price increase each year and having to waste my time calling them to knock a few quid off. I've not used them for years anyway. I've long suspected as a result of this web site advertising the fact that you can haggle, that the likes of the AA just whack up their prices as they know the majority of their members won't phone in asking for a lower renewal cost. And I don't need Gold membership and the benefits it brings. I don't need a few pence off a cup of coffee at the motorway services, which I avoid like the plague.

The other issue is the date on the renewal letter and the date received. Took 33 days to arrive from date of letter. Again, poor show by the AA as it gives you a more limited timeframe in which to call them to try and lower the cost.

I'm surprised that in the day and age of the Internet where we can spread the word that these companies just get worse and worse.

Wish others would do the same. If people left in their masses, then they would act.

I just did a comparison on comparethemarket, and the AA was not listed, Greenflag were very expensive at £127; £76 with more cover from another company, the cheapest being £54 from 'Cover my breakdown'. I like the AA, but not their policy of auto-renew.

My breakdown cover runs out next week.

    I pay £20 with Rescuemycar.
It has a £40 excess if you breakdown and if you have a fairly reliable car it just gives peace of mind.
Used them once in over 10 years when my timing chain broke.
Brilliant service, obviuosly couldn't repair it at the side of the road so took me to my garage of choice.
  • I think start rescue is £16 you also get an app that alerts them to your location using phone GPS so if you have any car incident you do not even need to ring them, just push one button.

You can also get a discount off the £16 with this hot deal

It would be.... probably be cheaper if you were not a member (and became a member) when you actually need them as you are not being punished for being a loyal member.
