The buyer used insufficient packaging to return the item. They failed in their duty of care to return it in the same condition as received.

In which case, I would state this in the eBay receipt, get a quote for having the screen fixed, and state that they either agree for this amount to be deducted from the refund, or you will take them to court for all your losses on the item.
