Buying a domain to use as a e-mail address

I am looking for some advice on who is good or reliable to use for a web forwarding service. e.g me@me.co.uk I want to simply buy the domain from them then add a few email addresses and point them to my gmail account.

Any advice or help would be great.

Many thanks

Jason.

I use 1&1.co.uk and they've been fine for 3 years so far.
  • Yep I use 1&1.co.uk too, not only for my own email but for a small charity I look after the IT and website for. No problems at all during the several years I've used them.

I pay the slight extra for their email service. That way I can send email from whateverilike@mydomain.com rather than from me@gmail.com. If you're an organistation you'll look much more professional and if you're an individual, well, it's pretty cool lol

http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ are good and quite cheap

When I login to the control panel and click on email forwarding I get the following options:

This page allows you to set up unlimited separate e-mail forwarding addresses for the domain name mydomain, with up to 3 destination addresses each.

To add a new email address, enter the required user name in the left hand box below and the full destination email address in the right hand box below. Click on update forwarding at the bottom of the page.

If you are forwarding to a pop box, enter the pop box user name (e.g. yourname-1) in the right hand box below.

If you wish to reject ALL email sent to a certain user name, enter the required user name in the left hand box below and Return to sender in the right hand box. (This option is particularly useful if you receive a large quantity of unsolicited email to a particular user only at a certain domain)

To delete an e-mail forwarding destination address, tick the box on the right and click the "Update Forwarding" button at the bottom of the page.

To set up the catch all, use the form at the bottom of the page.

ADD mail forwarding to another email address or to a pop box
    _________@mydomain - Forward to _________________

You have four choices for dealing with unknown users at your domain.

Please choose one of the following.
1 Reject mail sent to all unknown users, only those listed above will be valid.Email will be returned to the sender stating User unknown

2 As above, but with an assistance message (requires an email address to be added below).Email will be returned to the sender stating User unknown, contact [email address entered below] for assistance.

3 Forward mail sent to user@mydomain to user@[the domain name entered below]Email will be forwarded to the same user at the domain name entered below,
e.g. email sent to bob@mydomain is forwarded to bob@[domain name entered below]
and email sent to john@mydomain is forwarded to john@[domain name entered below]

4 Forward mail sent to unknown users to the email address below.Email will be forwarded to the email address entered below, i.e. if user is not listed above. Please enter the destination email address or domain name below:
Of course with gmail you can have have the from field say the address you own. To set it up you just have tell them the email address you own in settings and click the activation link in the email they send you (to confirm you own the email address and aren't just pretending to be someone else).

Then when composing email you can select different domains from a drop-menu
  • Thanks for all the advice that is enough stuff to get me sorted, regarding the address looking pro for replying I have checked this out.

I can get my address confirmed so I will be able to email out of my address so it shows as me@me.co.uk I already do this with a very basic free bigfoot email forwarding I use for forum sign ups etc and that worked great so I would imaging this would do the same.

    Thanks for all your help.
