Can a university increase its yearly fee on your last year of study? Does anyone know?

The government sets the fee cap each year. The university can set fees for all students up to that fee cap. The government have frozen the cap at £9,250 for 2018/19 and 2019/20.

So for example, two years at £5,500 then an increase to £6,500 on year 3 is fine? I’m just baffled on the £1000 increase.

They can set fees up to the cap for existing students already on a course as long as they indicated they may do so at the start of the course.

Are you paying your own fees? If not, it doesn't really matter what the fees are as your loan will cover the amount regardless.
