Iresa / Octopus - Credit dispute

I’ve received an email from Octopus saying that the administrator has decided I am owed £86.39 from credit on my Iresa account.

I took screenshots of my Iresa online account on 28/07/18 as soon as I found out that Iresa had ceased trading. It shows that I was in credit of approx £195 for gas and £40 for electricity.

I have now submitted a dispute form with Octopus and sent the screenshots of my account and I am waiting to hear back (within 7 days apparently).

Is it possible that their £86.39 could be correct? There’s no way I’ve used £150 worth of energy since 28th July (I was actually away on holiday when I took the screenshots and only returned this week)

Has anyone else had the same email and found their credit undervalued?

    Have you done the sums yourself to check the calculations.

    The accounts are in a mess so you need to do your own checking to see how much you've actually paid them and work out exactly how much you've used so you can determine whether you've over or underpaid.

    You need to go back to the initial readings when you joined them and work from there. A screen shot of your account wont have had the costs of the energy that you'd used for at least a month and may have been estimated anyway.

    My account reckons that I'm £189.25 in credit however I know that I actually owe then £25.50 based on the cost of what I've used since I started and how much I've paid.

    It's anybody's guess tbh, a complete farce at the moment as far as I'm concerned.

    My electricity credit balance keeps on changing - up, down, back up, down again!

    I've tried to work it out but there are so many adjustments it's hard to keep track of it all :eek:

    Was that credit based on an actual reading on 28th Jul ? Have you been submitting monthly reads, if not when was the last balance based on an actual read ? As above, you need to work it out yourself, I put every single read into a spreadsheet and work out my balance within a couple of pence.

    It is not really that difficult. You have an opening read and date, a cost per unit and daily charge, a closing read and date and how much you have paid in. With all those pieces you can work it out.

    In answer to your questions, I would say yes and no respectively.

    What you don't owe Iresa, Octopus will charge you for ... and I understand they are way, way more expensive than Iresa were.

    Think carefully before you challenge the finding.

    Yes, I've done that.

    I've been with them since March 2017 so I've done the calculations for each year and added them together, and taking into account interest earned, the balance showing on my Iresa account is about right at the moment, though there's a chance my balance may change again, in which case it won't be :)

    I've been trying to calculate my final amount of credit using the nice simple equation mentioned above, but am struggling with iresa's bills. For electricity it seems to make sense, but gas is more complicated.

    The calculations for gas need to use a calorific value which appears to be a variable amount.

    If I fix this amount at its average, I think I'm owed almost double what has been offered.

    How have you all worked this out? Can anyone supply a spreadsheet template they used?

  • I received notification of a final bill from Iresa for £ 579 as I was in dispute with them and stopped the direct debit. Now having queried the total based on their use of estimate when I always sent in the actual meter readings, they have agreed to reduce the total to £ 521.10

    As they are now defunct and I got switched over to Octopus without my agreement, now changing over to a new supplier. What rights do Iresa have to charge me given they are in administration. I feel it's clear they have little or no idea what the actual billings should be.

    Iresa are not charging you anything. Administrators have been appointed to wind up the company. As such, they have both the legal right and duty to seek out all money owed to the supplier. They will then decide how much in the £ to pay to any party owed money by Iresa.

    The SoLR regulations exist for a number of reasons. The key one is that your lights/boiler do not go out for up to 35 days whilst you seek out a new supplier. The secondary benefit is that credit balances are now 100% protected.

    You, of course, have every right to challenge the amount of money claimed - if necessary, by going to Court.
