Seaside day out from London

Options
I am looking at spending just one day next weekend somewhere by the sea. Already been to Brighton several times, so I was looking at some other interesting places not too far from London (2 hours max by train).

Any suggestions? I was recommended Ramsgate or Deal, but my knowledge is pretty much non-existent. Also, I would like to go somewhere that is not just 'sea and beach', just in case we are not lucky with the weather.

Unfortunately that would be too far away, it shows 3-4 hours from my place.

Deal isn't far from Dover Castle, which is nice day out.

Maybe try lunch and some window shopping at Leigh on Sea? Not really a beach but if you're looking for somewhere that isn't about kids rides and arcades then it's nice.

Dymchurch? I think there's a steam railway nearby if the weather isn't great.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

Or from London Victoria on Southern Rail. The part of the journey between Horsham and Chichester is very scenic.

    Margate?

It has the Turner Contemporary, lots of little shops and galleries (together with arcades), a decent food scene and isn't actually half bad even in the rain if you're bundled up. Lots of sandy beaches to walk along when the tide is out.

Where did you go in the end? I live in London and I'm always looking for a day at the seaside! I've been to Brighton and Southend on Sea.

I was thinking of Hastings the other month, but went Brighton instead. I have just sent colleagues all around the coast of southern Britain, so know a bit. Portsmouth isn't too bad to get to, direct train. Margate and Ramsgate were also on my radar, but like you, don't know what else is there!
  • Great Yarmouth is quite nice but Brighton is the best. :j

Also if you go by train then it is a very short walk from the station which makes life easier, particularly with children.
