  • Don't really know what percentage this £135.00 is I only know that I have been paying £11.50 per monht since November 2005 before that I can't remember. You you think I should take this to the financial ombudsman?

  • Hi there,

Call me ignorant, but ive always presumed that i had to pay a barclays fee every month for holding an account with them , ive been with them since 1986 and i understand that ive been paying the monthly additions fee from 1993ish onwards.

I have only just realised (yesterday) after going into my local branch that this fee is optional. I cant believe it.:o

I cannot remember the circumstances of starting paying as its so long ago, anyway i do know that i have winged about the fee for ages and have told numerous agents when doing my banking that i dont benefit from any of the advantages of the account.

Ive now cancelled the additions account, and have raised a complaint, what do you think they will do ? Call me stupid:o

I am usually so switched on with charges and the like, so i dont accept that after all these years ive been paying for something that i do not require.

    any advice is greatly appreciated

  • They won't repay Additions fees because of the length of time you have had the account, and the longevity in not querying it. I won't call you stupid but they are not claimable charges even if you didn't use the benefits of the Additions account. Did you get any bank charges apart from that? Those ones are claimable.

  • I have read a lot recently that many people have been mis-sold additions accounts for Barclays and the respective equivelants from others banks.

Is there good grounds to claim these fee's back? Many are 5 - £10 a month
    CC £1700/£1477 HSBC Acc. £-1750/£400
    Barclay Acc. £-2009/£-1280 / A & L Acc. £-908 £0!! / Finance £-1008 £-590 / Loan £8000 £8000

I've just found this thread by chance. Just wondering if it's possible to claim back additions fees on the grounds of being missold?

I opened a Barclays account in 2000, I think it was. I wanted an overdraft and was told that I could only have one if I had the additions account. I agreed to the charges for this. Anyway, the fee went up and up and I never used any of the "benefits" attached, except for Green Flag Recovery twice. In the end I called in to my local branch and asked if I could stop having the additions extras because I couldn't afford it and would it effect my overdraft? I was told it wouldn't affect my overdraft and the lady was quite surprised when I explained I was told I had to have the additions account to have an overdraft.

To be honest I hadn't thought any more about it since, but I was Googleing about accounts and this thread appeared in the listings so thought I'd ask and see if there's a chance of getting any of my money back? I felt cheated at the time, but I was quite ill and never really bothered to question it, which, in hindsight, was stupid.

I'm already claiming back the unlawful fees. There were times when the additions fee took me over my overdraft limit and, thus, incured another fee!

So, any change do you reckon?

See the above in bold as to why I don't think it was missold. If you have used the benefits or were eligible for the benefits and didn't use them then I don't think you have a case.

Even though I was lied to in order to get the overdraft? I only used Green Flag a few months before I cancelled it, which means I paid about 8 years worth of fees I didn't need/want. The only reason I kept paying was because I was told I had to have the additions account to have an overdraft. This was clearly untrue.

If you can prove to Barclays that the benefits were ones you could not use, for example, car breakdown and you don't drive(apologies but it is the easiest analogy to do) and you can prove you could never have benefitted then you might argue the difference. If not then you would have to add the bit that you were made to have it because of what you were told and see what they say.

Well, the anaolgy would stand actually, because I opened the account in 2000 and didn't start driving until 2004!

But the main point of contention is the fact I was lied to. I'll write and see what they say, but I won't hold my breath!

    Thanks. :)
  • Hi there, I've been paying for an additions account for the last 5 years, it's £35 a month and I thought I was paying for the use of my overdraft but apparently I'm paying for a load of 'benefits' that I didn't know I had! Anyway, I've got the last 5 years worth of bank statements and have the template letter all ready but I can't find what address I should send it all to, does anyone know?

    Thanks!
