One use card

Both my son and daughter-in-law are 40 next year and I was thinking of treating them to a nice meal in Manchester and a hotel for the night. I don't want to quibble about money so would like to give them a credit or debit card just for the one use. Is there such a thing? Or would I have to have to add him to one of my cards, and if I did could I cancel it afterwards?

Why not load up a pre-paid card with the budgeted amount and give it to them as a gift? :)

I don't really want to put a limit on the amount, mainly because I don't know how much it will cost, but thanks anyhow

You know your relatives and I don't, but having a budget gives clarity.

I'd have a reluctance to spend if a limit wasn't given beforehand. For the whole evening I would have a mild anxiety about whether I was being overgenerous to myself with someone else's money!

It would be quite easy to add him as a second card holder in advance, take the cardback afterwards and cancel it. Check your card will allow it though, I think some of them may expect second card holders to be at the same address.

I imagine it should be possible to do this without messing with new cards. Can you tell the hotel this is a gift, pay the room in advance and bill you for the meals as well?

Hotels are used to storing card details in advance, to protect themselves from people who don't turn up, or a provisional charge on check-in, cancelled on paying the actual sum on checkout , so it should be possible to vary this slightly.

Or for business clients, airline staff, etc, it must be normal that the bill isn't necessarily going to the person checking out.

Presumably the OP doesn't want to restrict his son and daughter in law to dining at a hotel. Unless they've done something to offend him in the past...

Yes, I've just reread the OP and realised that.

I wonder if restaurants can accept the same arrangement.

  • You could add your son to your credit card account as an additional card holder - but you can't "give" a credit (or debit) card account to somebody.
