Yes there is, but popping the window is still the much more common method and of course that works anywhere regardless of where the keys are.0 -

The issue is that the manufacturers all go for a system manufactured by NXP, who have failed to keep up with the ability of the thieves. They can't just swap it out or upgrade either. It's hard baked into the car's comms network and infotainment etc. It won't be until models are replaced that a new system can be spec'd and used.
Once the weakness had been found, it didn't take them long to realise that they could take a £9k Dacia or £90k Merc with the same fault built in.
The thieves are still working at making their system better. The trick isn't new, it was demonstrated in 2011 but it required several thousand pounds worth of digitally controlled filters to pull off. But the thieves now have it worked out to a hand held unit that can be mass built for about £20 and will work over even longer distances.
They don't need the key or to hack the system via the OBD to create a fake/clone key. It thinks the genuine key is in the car, which is why it agrees to start.
If they can get within 2m of an unprotected key and the device they use has sufficient range, they can pull the trick off. There have been tales of people losing their cars at supermarkets because they've been followed as they've walked in. The thieves work in pairs and will target valuable vehicles by following them in and parking nearby. One catches up to the victim, the other waits and then approaches the car shortly afterwards.
t's sadly an issue that will never go away. Even if they fix this, the thieves will just resort to other methods of taking what isn't theirs.0 -

They do with Fords. We've had 3 boy racer Fords go from round here, and every one has left a bit of side window glass on the drive. They only ever got one back, and it has a proximity alarm now that I can hear chirping when it is quiet.
I suppose the plug in your laptop boys are the lower end of the market, the opportunists who drive past in vans at all hours, and the higher end thieves simply pre pepare by using the VIN number to code a replacement keyless doodah.
I think I've seen that footage where one thief stands with what could be his snap tin against the wall of the house, I suspect that was released by someone making a fortune from "Faraday Cage" biscuit tinsI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
