Smart Meter compatability
What would be really useful is that someone in the know could tell us which smart meters (SME1) work with different suppliers.
I understand version 1 are prototypes with suppliers using different protocols and networks to communicate with them.
For example British Gas and Sainsburys are the same.
Are there any others which are fully compatible?

Simply put, just think that if you currently have a smart meter, and switch supplier, you should be prepared to manually provide readings to the new supplier until further notice.
In the rare instance the smart meter continues to work as such with a new supplier, just consider that a bonus!
Be aware, smart meters are not just about the meter sending readings to the supplier electronically, but the all important IHD which is where the hype suggests people will be able to save money (by using less energy)
Sadly, once you switch supplier, that IHD may also fail to work or at best not be updated with your latest tariff. If it goes wrong, don't expect any new supplier to assist you.
Again, should the new supplier be able to help, just think of that as a bonus.
As you say, Sainsbury's Energy is supplied by British Gas (under a white label agreement]
You may have more success with white labels, but it's not guaranteed.
Also be aware that white labels can change their 'parent' supplier.
Notable recent changes include Ebico - originally supplied via SSE, now supplied by RHE, and M&S who will end their relationship with SSE on 28-Sep-2018; new agreement with Octopus Energy.
(Remember, where such realtionships end, it has now been established that the white label customers will automatically remain customers of the original 'parent' supplier; customers will actively need to request a change to any other supplier)0 -

Smartenergygb is the voice of the rollout programme so I suppose they might know.
But having seem their spokesman on Breakfast tv recently when he said that 80% of the existing meters were compatible I would take what they say with a huge pinch of salt.
