Class 10 SD card with 50Mbps write speed? Does it exist?

I've been backwards & forwards with my dash cam manufacturer & i think they're just having me on. I've asked them a few times regards this & they've maintained that the maximum write speed the memory card (micro SD) can be is 50Mbps.

I learned this week that this is different to 50MB/s. So i got back in touch & asked them to provide acceptable manufacturer, model & capacity cards. They provided 2 out of 3 - manufacturer & capacity but not the model, choosing only to say class 10.

So i did some searching on what they gave me & the slowest write speed i could find was https://www.kingston.com/en/flash/microsd_cards/sdcs 10MB/s on this Kingston card.

So throw that in to a converter & 10MB/s = 80Mbps which still exceeds their 50Mbps maximum.

So i'm putting it to them that either...

1) They're setting such an unrealistically slow write speed that it actually doesn't exist. All the cards marketed as being for dash cams well exceed their maximum write speed. Even the slowest one i could find. I believe they're doing this so that they can forever say that it's the memory card at fault and never accept their device may be at fault.

OR

2) despite saying they actually do mean 50Mbps they actually mean 50MB/s.

Right now the email is saved as a draft ready to be sent. I just don't want to say cards not exceeding 50Mbps (so 6.25MB/s) don't exist if they actually do.

I just can't find any.

I can’t see how having an SD cars with a faster write speed capability could impact the operation of the dash cam - a slower card would not work as it would not be able to write quickly enough, but can’t see what the issue could be when it is the other way round.

Class 10 cards tend to be high speed (as you have found) and so i’d also be surprised if you could find one at less than 50 Mbps. Have you tried a higher speed card in the dash cam and if so, what happens? Do the instructions make any reference to it not being compatible with SDHC or SDXC cards?

  • I used one which is writing at about 28MB/s which i suspect will be a 30MB/s maximum for it.

I bought a new one which is 20MB/s.

I get the strong feeling that they're just trying to avoid any acceptance
  • Yeah the company (Mio) warned against the Sandisk 'ultra' and 'extreme' cards. Right now though and the purpose of this thread the sticking point appears to be the write speed.

I've used a Toshiba M302 Exceria micro SD card in 32GB, 64GB & 128GB capacities. Class 10. That's what i was getting the 28MB/s write speed figure at. I've used all 3 capacities in my wife's dash cam (same series as mine, just with a rear cam involved too) with no problem whatsoever which Mio seem to be ignoring (because to me if the card was the issue then it'd be the issue in all devices it's used in and not just one).

I linked them to an Amazon link to the card i used and they said now to be buying from Amazon and eBay as they said they can be counterfeit and i should buy from places like Currys or Argos. Looking at this though https://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Exceria-M302-Micro-Memory/dp/B01EAKB0YK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1534672771&sr=8-2&keywords=toshiba+exceria+M302 it's sold by Toshiba?

Nevertheless, i actually bought my card from eBuyer (not eBay) and the 32GB version came supplied by the installer who runs his own car electrical shop. I feel they're just looking for excuses.

I noted that the Toshiba M302 Exceria card never seems to get listed in these 'cards to use in a dash cam' lists so i bought one that is - the Transcend High Endurance.

Turns out this has a 20MB/s write speed - which still obviously exceeds Mio's statement of a 50Mbps maximum.

I also don't think the person or people responding to me have a full grasp of the English language which i don't think is helping matters.
  • A Canon EOS 5D IV (30 mega pixel professional SLR and video camera) has the following spec for memory cards:
"Minimum card write speed required for 4K 30p recording: CF UDMA 7 – 100MB/sec, SD UHS-1 – 90MB/sec or higher"

That is Megabytes per second, not Megabits. There are plenty of Lexar and Sandisk cards that quote that spec, I doubt they are fictional specifications.

So are you currently using the Transcend card? What is the problem?

I've been using the Transcend since yesterday and experienced one of the issues immediately.

There's 2 problems, one can be tested immediately as it happens constantly and tbh isn't a major problem just an irritation.

The other happens here & there, seemingly at total random. Since the dash cam was installed at the end of October 2017 i've actually only noticed this issue 3 times - that's how infrequent it is, yet even just happening once could prove to be very costly.

Problem #1 - The unit is set to record in 3:00min clips which it did for 5-6 months. Then out of the blue it now records as it sees fit despite whether i select 3:00min clips, 5:00min or 1:00min. Each clip will be cut off anywhere between 0:00 seconds in length (therefore just a still picture) or the full 3:00mins. 1 minute could end up being say 5 clips for example.

Like i said, more an irritation than a serious problem.

Problem #2 - this is the serious one, where the device just randomly doesn't record an entire journey. A typical day for me will be 3 journeys.

    Home>work, then park up.
    Work>gym, then park up.
    Gym>home, then park up.

The first time i noticed it i came within cm (i say that as i know the phrase is inches but i'd say it was closer than that!!) of being wiped out on the motorway by someone who just wanted to nick in front at the last minute as we exited the motorway.

As i get home & plug the card in for the clip i noticed that the entire journey hadn't been recorded. So that day (apparently - according to the dash cam) i drove to work and i drove from the gym to home but i never drove from work to the gym - it didn't record any of it.

I format the card at the end of every week as instructed and this happened midweek. A full week will fit on a 32GB card with room to spare.

This issue is much harder to test as it's so random, yet it could end up being very costly if i ever do have an incident that say would go 50/50 without camera evidence & that's the occasion the camera decides to not record.
  • They seem to have changed their stance on the maximum write speed...

    Thank you for your email.

The 50Mbps indication is for the older software versions which are now compatible with Class 10 micro SD cards (10MB/sec writing speed).

We do not advise the SanDisk Ultra or Extreme because, even it they are Class 10, their writing speed will be quicker than 10MB/sec which will not work with our devices.

Both the links you provided will work fine with your device (the SanDisk High Endurance is particularly suitable as this card allow a lot of overwriting).

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

So now all of a sudden we're talking MB/s and we've moved away from Mbps.

Make your mind up Mio :T
