Water Softener Salt

We have a Domextra water softener - old but still works. However as the years go by, it gets harder and harder with the big bags of cube salt. Both because we have to collect bags from a builders’ merchant because we don’t buy enough to warrant the sacks of salt being delivered and they are hugely heavy to get out of the boot and drag into the garage and then drag to the kitchen where the water softener is.
Do we have to always get these big heavy bags of salt or is there an alternative?
