switching from British Gas - unexpected hazard

I used Money Saving Expert to find a new gas supplier. I switched from British Gas to Ebico. The switch happened on 7th July 2018.
By early August 2018 I still hadn’t received a final bill from British Gas. I rang them and was told that they had sent the bill by email, and told me the address which they had used. I pointed out that they had inexplicably sent my bill to an email address for a job which I left ten years ago and that I always receive and pay paper bills. They agreed to send me a paper bill; they did so, and I paid.
On 18th August I received a letter from a debt collection agency trying to collect payment for my bill, which I have paid but which supposedly should have been paid in July - before I received it! Naturally I intend to resist paying their charges, but I am aware that this will be an uphill struggle.
What’s more, my personal information (in the form of a gas bill) has evidently been emailed to a third party - my old employers - without my consent, opening me up to identity theft.
So be made aware of the need to chase up one’s final bill when changing supplier!
