Ventured out for the first time wearing a scarf, on Sunday. The Husband took me to a Tesco in next town. I kinda did 70s time traveller with sunglasses - 70s print scarf tied behind my head with long tails, a Barbara Hulanicki top with a sweetheart neckline and Jaeger trousers from Oxfam which were so wide at the bottom I felt like I was wearing flares.
No comments from anyone (phew) and if anyone gave me filthy looks, I didn't notice.
My mother had visited Friday. I opened the door and she told me I looked Muslim. I think she meant it as a joke, but I wasn't impressed.
Then when she was talking to me, she told me that her favourite piece of clothing on me, is a Patsy Seddon for Phase Eight black linen cardigan. Collarless, round neckline, no fastenings, slim sleeves and ankle length. Very much like an abaya. Found that quite amusing. I would be wary of wearing it with a scarf. But if I ever go on holiday to Dubai...
Showed my mother various caps, bones and scarves and explained stuff. She seemed interested and asked questions.
Yesterday she was back to pushing wigs at me.0 -
Just found this thread!
I have alopecia areata; I have had it for 6 years. I use a Lee Stafford shampoo, called Hair Growth. I absolutely love it- not cheap granted but it works well for me.
I usually wear cotton bandana caps- I buy job lots of them from a special shop at my local hospital but there are also websites that sell them. I have them in every colour and pattern which I match to my outfit- the one I am wearing today is black and white flower pattern to match the black and white flowered dress I am wearing. My favourite is pink, slightly heavier but lined, and gathered at the back with a gorgeous jewelled scrunchie. I hate wigs, they irritate me- I have lots of lovely ones but cannot tolerate them. I have one which I wear most- dark brown, mid length but I twisted the back part up and clipped in a hairpiece. This always draws admiring remarks! I have some scarves but they always end up giving me a headache or sliding off my head!*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -
Hair loss can affect just your scalp or your entire body. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications0

I have always had fine hair but since I hit my 50s my hair seems to have got very thin and breaking at the sides. I did go to see a doctor who just did a blood test, and said everything is fine and offer no other help.
When I have my hair cut at hairdressers, which is not that often, they always say your hair is thin and fine, are you on any medication!
Wish I could have nice thick hair, my dear mum had lovely thick wavy hair, but my grandma had fine hair, I must get it off her.
Someone recommended Hairburst chewable vitamins from Superdrug to help with hair loss, not tried them yet as they are £20 but I think they often have them on offer.0 -
The trick to stop a scarf falling off, is to wear a bone (may be called a bonnet, instant scarf, underscarf) which is shaped to the head but stretchy, underneath it. You don't need to have it on show.
My cheapest one cost 1.56. It provides a slightly rougher surface for a scarf to cling to. Other benefit is, that you can pin scarf to the bone with pins, safety pins, stock pins, kilt pins, hijab pins, magnetic 'pins', brooches etc etc which also decorate your scarf/bandana.
Thinking of the winter, I got a friend to knit me one of those !!!!! hat beanies and I found earwarmers for under a fiver each, on an equestrian website called The Saddlery Shop. Not the fluffy headphone type ones, these are more like ski ones.
Thank you for all the recommendations, I will put them in an Evernote notebook and explore.
I went to Tesco last week and it was really anxiety-inducing. My mother kept whispering in my ear, telling me who was gawping at me, which didn't help. In the end I resorted to shades.0 -
Zinc is essential for hair. Try pumpkin seeds0

It's lovely that you feel so happy and FEMININE with your 'new hair'.
I find hair loss soul destroying. I'm on the verge of having to wear a hat at ALL times.
However, your post has inspired me.
May I ask if your wig is synthetic or natural?
If it's synthetic does it look natural?
Are wigs expensive?
Thank you for your uplifting post
Hi Weegiewumman...sorry I didn't notice this post earlier!
My wigs are both synthetic - but are a decent quality.
Do they look natural? Only one person has asked if it is a wig - and she had to feel it to see if it was synthetic or not...so I would say they look pretty natural!
As with anything, you pretty much pay for what you get...a short 'nice' synthetic would probably cost starting between £100 and £150 and go up in price to the very high hundreds....I would talk to a wig supplier to decide what would by most suitable and then see if they have any offers on!
Obviously, longer wigs will cost more...I tried a couple of mid-length ones, but they looked all wrong on my face...I am obviously meant to have short hair!
Like you, I wore a hat whatever the season for many years...straw in the summer, and woolly in winter....these days I just decide which of my two ' hairstyles' I will be seen in !
I accept that wigs are not going to be the answer for everyone...but for me...almost life-changing!0 -
I recommend you check out - https://www.alopecia.org.uk/ - they may have a support group in your area, they have a on-line forum filled with people who have 'been there done that etc.
