Depends on the authentication, sometimes we need to authenticate in the usual way and sometimes we don't. For example when we register a payment card at Amazon UK they don't need the CVV number from the signature strip and the card is authenticated without it.

I'm confused now. Amazon sales occur in a card-not-present environment but OPs problem was in a card-present situation.
