When to fill up with petrol?

I am going to make a round trip of 400 miles, 200 each way and my car has a tank capacity of 35 litres, about 7 1/2 gallons.

The car gets about 45 mpg driving at 75 - 80 mph.

When I get to my destination it will be a week before I drive back home.

Should I fill my tank up just before my destination at the cheapest petrol station and leave the tank full for a week or should I fill it up at the first opportunity on the way back?

Fill it up the day before you come home....

No point filling it up when you get there ....
No point waiting until you're ready to go home to do it.
Do it the day before, then get on the road on the day you're driving home without having to faff about and think about petrol stations.

My car's got 60 litres... I rarely have to think about when to fill up :)

It's illegal to drive at these speeds. The maximum is 70mph in the UK.

This is a really odd question. Are you looking for the cheapest option? Then fill up at the cheapest petrol station.

Or are you worried that leaving the tank full for a week will be a problem?

    Exactly!

I was recently in Germany and was driving at speeds over 100 mph .

Would have went faster but car couldn't manage it.

There is no day before I come home.

Straight off the ship into the car.

As you have a range of around 330 miles you will have over 100 miles spare capacity to find a petrol station on the way home. I am sure there will be a 24 hour petrol station close to the port so available whatever time you arrive back. Do your planning now so you know where it is.

I get a bit nervous if I end a journey with the tank less than half full. Who knows what calamity might befall the nation and disrupt the supply of fuel to filling stations before I next use it? So I say fill it up just before reaching your destination.
