Car insurance - tracker needed if car stolen?

Hi

Im about to renew my car insurance and, looking at esure, it takes my attention that they say that, if your car is stolen or loss and you dont have a tracker installed in the car, then, they will not cover it

Is that something general with all the car insurance companies? Its the first time i see something like this

I have two cars with Esure and nothing mentioned about that.....is it a Ferrari or a Porsche ?
Can you quote the exact wording of that clause ?
  • Sure

Update: E16/06 Title: Endorsements which may apply to your policy
We have added a new policy endorsement. If this is applicable to you, it will be shown in your policy schedule

under the section 'Endorsement in the Policy Booklet that apply':
    13. We will not cover loss of or damage to your car or its contents under section 3 of the policy booklet (theft or attempted theft) unless a tracking device is fitted to your car. This tracking device must be in full working order at all times, and active with a current network subscription or air time contract.

That does say " if applicable" but in my policy documents the only reference to a tracker is " if they have asked you to fit one " ?

'If this is applicable to you' - does that mean that some policies say you have to have a tracker fitted, and if you haven't, no cover?

As an aside, we have just had to make a claim with them - suffice it to say we will not be using them again - the worst company we have ever had to deal with.

My documents say you are not covered under that section unless they asked you have a tracker fitted and you don't get one fitted OR that you have told them there is a tracker fitted and you don't set it.
So if you haven't got one fitted and they haven't asked you to fit one your ok.
  • Hi. Yes, in the booklet then says it is something that is applicable only if you are requested explicitly to fit one, but, in the T&C update it is redacted as if it was mandatory for everybody

Having heard what i heard about them would not surprise me though

Two of my cars have a tracker requirement but that is because of their value. Not the location.

Nowadays it can be mid range cars that have that requirement. Often £50k and above but some will be £40k or even £30k and over.

I understand that , but surely if the car isn't fitted with one and the insurer doesn't request one be fitted then it that clause doesn't apply?

The clause only applies if it is listed on the policy schedule.

  • Not required on my cars; both worth less than £1K
