Insurance - Can the Policyholder not be the driver

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to have an insurance policy for some else as the only driver?
Asking for someone who is a carer. His parents own a car, but are now not able to drive themselves. The car is theirs and any driving of this car would be for them, so they want to be the policy holder, but with him as the only driver.

Anyone know if this is possible?

    That makes no sense.

He would need to take out his own policy on the car

Should be, he would be the main driver of a vehicle owned by, and registered to, the policy holder.

You would likely have to do this over the 'phone, rather than on an internet form though.

The alternative is for him to take out an insurance policy on a car not owned by him, and registered to someone else, which is also allowed.

If the insurance is in the parents name, any accidents or claims made previously by the son would have to be declared, and affect the policy, the only advantage I can see is if the parents have a full no-claims bonus that they want to use. The driver won't build any no-claims, and any accident would still affect any insurance he wanted to take out.

I think it would depend on if the parents still have a valid driving licence or does their disability mean they have had to surrender their licence.

Can you insure a car if you do not hold a current licence?

I would think it is a fairly common scenario for a carer to be the main driver of a parent's car.

If one had a chauffeur for ones Maybach one would want to register it in ones's own name and insure oneself with the chauffeur as main driver surely, and one might not even have a driving licence.......

But he hasn't got any insurable interest in the vehicle, so that is likely to be a non-starter.

Probably be easiest to gift the vehicle over, register it in his name and then insure it. Downside of that is he'd likely start with zero NCB.

Might be difficult to insure oneself then.

Erm, if he is driving the car then yes he does have an insurable interest as you put it. insuring a car isn't just for the benefit of the owner, its also in case you dunch someone else!

Really doesnt make sense what you are asking.

That is precisely why one might need to employ a chauffeur to drive it :D

I would expect that there are quite a few Motability cars where the keeper & policyholder is not the main driver too, although insurance is part of the Motability package.

Best plan is to ring a few insurers and ask for quotes.

Or ask Motability for advice - it must be a common problem.
