The idea of a tourist tax in Cornwall has been mooted to help cover the cost of the huge influx of visitors at summertime.

It is an issue which is debated each year, but always gets rejected on the grounds that it would be too difficult to implement, is deeply unpopular and would put people off visiting.

The idea of a tourist tax is to get visitors to contribute to extra pressure on services that occurs when the population rockets during holiday season.

Many countries such as Rome, Amsterdam and Paris, all have additional local charges which visitors pay and tourism hotspots around the UK, such as Edinburgh, Bristol and Brighton, have considered cashing in.

Ideas raised previously include a small nightly charge – say £1 per night’s accommodation in Cornwall.

The main problem with this scheme is the cost of how to implement it and collect the money in the first place.

  • As a Cornishman, I have been waiting all my life for that Golden Egg as you so quaintly put it. All we are left with is gallons of English sewerage after the annual silly season. This year has been the worse to date. Why the hell should our taxes pay to clean up after the emmets? A tourist tax works in dozens of countries and cities all over Europe and further afield.

    Odd username, considering.
  • It's Cornish
  • This year has been utter misery in our Duchy. Too many tourists have nearly broken the infrastructure with the leaders of all the emergency services calling for better planning. The Cornwall Tourist Board has come in for severe criticism and many have contacted Cornwall Council and MPs over this.
Yes, a bed or tourist tax is now needed and is being called for.
We have to live with this dangerous chaos.

VAT on accommodation and hospitality in many European countries ranges from 8% to 15%. Leaving space for local tourist taxes that can be used locally based on local needs, conditions and knowledge. In the UK all hospitality industries accept the yoke of 20% VAT that's grabbed by central government to be spent on pet projects. HS2, anyone?
