Go back to previous card issuer or a sub-prime

Long story short, left the UK 8 years ago, now moving back.

I’ve kept my bank account open whilst out of the country with the banks permission and I had a Barclaycard when I left that ended up staying open until I remembered about it and closed it about 2 years ago. It was at zero balance for years.

Just been put back on the electoral roll.

Now these days credit cards are useful even if you pay them off in full each month so I’d like one for the purchase protection aspect.

Would it be best to apply for Barclaycard again, as they will be able to see my history with them and my bank account with Barclays or better to try a sub-prime cards first?

I have no reason to believe my credit is bad, I’ve never missed any payments etc, just concerned with the lack of history really as I’ve been absent although having the Barclaycard open until a couple of years back may help with that although there were no payments.

I am self-employed (consultant) so have money coming in. I will use the eligibility checker on the card before applying however this is merely a guide so wanted to apply for the card most likely to be approved.

With a thin file, I would try your own bank if they offer something suitable.

Try an eligibility checker to see if you have better options than sub prime, although you're likely to be limited.
