Student benefits

Apart from council tax exemption, what other help and benefits can students get whilst at university?

I'm assuming by "benefits" you mean "money" or "opportunities to spend less money".

Lots of courses will offer scholarships for academic capability and achievements, often in the region of £1,000 or more, so it's worth putting the hours in to smash your course and possibly get some extra well-earned moolah.

f you're in a situation of financial hardship, most universities will have a hardship fund which they'll be able to use to assist you if you meet the required criteria.

In terms of saving money, that uni ID card (you know, the one with the dreadful close-up of hungover fresher's-week you) can often get you some decent discounts...and if you're not sure, just ask a shop assistant; sometimes if you ask nicely, they'll knock a few bob off the price, depending on where you are!

Finally, a great way to get some extra money at uni is with a part-time job; perhaps barwork/retail but if you cand find something more interesting and enjoyable, go for it!

Hope this helps - give me a shout if I've gotten the wring end of the stick with your question here though!
  • If you are talking about welfare benefits, none other than Council tax discount unless you are disabled or have dependent children?

Totally on the right path jyemo12. Just wondering if for example you!!!8217;d get an extra benefit such as reduced tv liscense fee etc. (Sadly not though lol)

I guess I am going to be a student once, so just want to enjoy all the perks whilst I have the opportunity.
Council tax exemption is amazing. Nus card with meal discounts etc and cinema is also great.

You do kind of get a reduced TV license as you only pay for the time that you're at Uni, not for the summer break. Freshers week usually has businesses coming in to give out free pizza/sign you up to stuff that you don't want/don't need, NUS web site's useful for discounts with your card, the local bus company often have cheaper tickets for students so it's worthwhile looking on their web site, there's a student rail card for when you visit home too.
