I quite liked the article. it allowed me to compare what ours did to the robo-advice firms and see they are not delivering. I put the dates into FE and our lowest risk portfolios and got £5451 on risk 3 and £5664 on risk 4. (3 would match VLS20 and 4 would match VLS40 for risk).

Of course, we wouldn't deal with £5000 but robo-advice does. And that is what it is good for. Robo-advice is there to for small investors who can't get access to full advice and feel daunted by platforms and multi-asset funds (which I still think is the better option for DIY investors as its not that difficult if you give it a bit more than 5 minutes)

If you don't mind me inquiring, how did you fair with the high risk returns.

Not a great article, is it?

Do you have a better article? It's the best analysis I have found on the UK robo market. As dunstonh says it's good enough to get a feel for the performance which is generally adequate and will for many people put off by the DIY and Advised market be better than saving in cash, etc.

Nope. I haven't looked, but it seemed a bit selective rather than comprehensive. Maybe you are right and it's as good as it gets. (It still had a dreadful typo.)
  • I find it quite misleading when comparing a (likely) globally diverse high risk portfolio to a FTSE 100 tracker. Why are they not, at the very least, comparing it to a global tracking index like the FTSE All-World index? That would at least be more accurate.

I guess it's because a UK index tracker was what the majority of retail UK investors would have been sold until recently. Still the numbers are there so you can compare the performance with anything you like.

I suspect they were using the FE risk scale which puts a FTSE 100 tracker at 100. So, they using that as a benchmark?

    Risk 8 -5878
    Risk 7 -5874
    Risk 6 -5856
    Risk 5 -5807

We dont have anyone on risk 9 or 10 so they are not configured. They would use the same underlying funds but the weightings adjusted. As no-one is in them, the software isnt set up for them. I would expect risk 9 & 10 to have underperformed as its heavy in emerging markets which have had a bad time of late.
