hello, I wonder if someone can please help.
I paid £200 by accident into the wrong bank account...i paid it into my mothers account instead of another family member.
my mother has not used the bank for a few years ..she phoned the bank up santander and they told her that the bank account was closed and a debt owing had been passed on to a collection agency.the lady told her that as the account was closed the money would rebound back into my account with lloyds in about 20 days time...the time passed and i asked my bank when the money would be returned and they told me that my mother would have to sort it out from her bank.
i told my mother and she told me that she received a letter from her bank santander a week or so ago saying....money was paid in her account and unless you dispute it then it will be returned to sender................so my mother done nothing assuming that the money will be returned to sender as letter stated...then today my mother had a letter from cabot financial saying..........thankyou for your recent payment ,your santander banking current account with us is now settled and closed. outstanding balance £0.
does anyone know what has happened please?
my mother is very ill all the time with crippling anxiety and depression plus mobility problems and pain and would not be able to pay me the money back as she struggles and needs to pay to keep the house warm to ease her pains.
i cant afford to lose the money myself
.
i dont understand whats gone wrong..was money meant to be returned to me or does the money have to be paid on mothers debt?
i hope someone can please help.. thankyou

I'm sorry, but I fear that the money has gone.
Your mother could try writing to cabot explaining what happened and asking for the money back - but they will almost certainly refuse. They may also start hassling her for more money if the £200 didn't cover the amount she owed them.0 -
Seems rather convenient that the £200 settled the balance exactly, ask them (Cabot) for a statement of account, you may at least get some of it back.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080

Doesn't help your situation, but when a bank accidentally pays money into a wrong account and that person spends it, they can end up in court for theft, but if you do it to the bank, they just say, thank you very much, not our problem!0

If you receive money by mistake and it's clearly not yours and you spend it anyway then yes, you can end up in court for theft because that's what you did.
If YOU send the money to the wrong account because YOU put the sort code/account number in incorrectly and the bank did what you told them to do (going through usually a verification stage and indeed, a security step in many cases) it's fairly obviously not their problem. Despite that fact, they will actually try and help get the money back now as the regulations were changed to further help the customer.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

The balance (with interest and fees) could have been more than £200.0 -

But Cabot have said the account has been settled, ie there is no balance left to pay.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -

You could also argue that if the OP's mother had not left a bad debt at the bank the money would be in her account now?0
