Waze

Options
I've used Waze a few times now and found it helpful. When there was a delay on the motorway after i finished work it took me a different route when i set it up than the normal route (motorway).

What i'm wondering is say i'm on a journey of reasonable length, like an hours drive (i'm thinking coming back from Trafford Centre here as there always seems to be some sort of delay on the way back). I set Waze up as i come to set off & it routes me as normal but on the way there's been an accident a reasonable distance ahead .... will Waze auto-reroute or does it only go off what was in place when you set the journey originally?

Just wondering if it was possible whether it'd bring me off at a junction for example, take me A/B roads to bypass a load of non moving traffic on the motorway and then back on the motorway, something to this effect?

it calculates using updates. There is about .25 mile parallel bypass at my local hospital. In peek rush hour time it re-routed me onto this road, and providing someone would let me out would have been faster, not by much but still faster. However in this case I was 5 cars slower.

It wouldn't be a very good app if it just stuck to the the original route. The whole point of it is that it works via updates in real-time and updates as you go.

Both Waze and Google Maps apps are good at real-time rerouting in traffic. I generally trust Google or Here apps to reroute me efficiently round large congestion. But to expect them to have predicted the future and choose the best route in advance, when conditions change on the go, and you're already stuck on one route, well that's too much to expect.

    It updates constantly.

It slightly irritates me in that it takes back routes just to save seconds; I often end up driving through housing estates for minimal saving.

It'll be interesting to see how things develop, as more and more people use waze, google maps, and similar.

For example, an accident happens on a motorway, and immediately hundreds of apps automatically try to re-route - and they all spot that a narrow winding road through a housing estate is currently clear. So within minutes that road becomes gridlocked.

There are suggestions that the apps will need to get smarter, and realise that they sometimes need to spread traffic over multiple routes.... which means that only some users will be sent over the fastest route. Others will have to be sent over slower routes.

I thought this recently after a section of the motorway was closed for some time. I went the back roads & they were surprisingly busy. It made me wonder how many people were following their Waze app or similar because i'd suspect that normally they'd just stick to the A-roads.

Some years ago I was approaching an accident on the m25, and was amazed how many people also turned off at the junction before the blocked one even tough the traffic was still moving on the motorway and wuthout a gps you would knot have known what is coming up or where to turn off.

The good thing is that as the road get congested then it starts spreading the traffic out. I once drove to the same place about 7 times, and each time the 15 mile journey was different. Sometimes by lot and other by a few streets
