Trying to get from the M40/M25 junction to Luton Airport via the M1 in the early hours. So, clockwise between j16 and j21.

Have heard something about a total carriageway closure overnight but for the life of me cannot get this confirmed. It may be tomorrow night.

Any help please?

Looks like J23 - J28 stretch has some total closures overnight.

Yep, and it confirms that a big stretch of my route was totally closed LAST night (a great help)... dear God, are the motorways a national network or aren't they? Why is there no single number I can call to ask for specific information about planned closures..?

Virtually all motorways and major roads have full closures on at one or several points a night.

Think yourself lucky, you only had to do one trip. I do nights as a truck driver and go all over the UK and have to deal with this 5 nights a week and many nights not only the normal route we'd use is closed but so are the alternatives as well and we end up being routed up narrow country roads. One closure adds a total of 80 miles to one of my routes.

You can contact the Highways Agency and they'll tell you, you can look on the trafficengland.com website or use the Highways Agency app to check.
