  • Hi there, further to the above I would suggest Sedgefield, its only about 25 moins from there. Sedgefield is a very nice village and very old - considered locally as an affluent area. Not sure how much it would be to rent a place but there are plenty of old houses as well as a new estate so dont think you would have any trouble finding somewhere. Or for cheapness I could suggest Trimdon Village, but avoid the other Trimdons. I have a small family and find Trimdon very safe and I would expect having a new baby this is what is important. I would guess Sedgefield is the same though avoid anywhere round the village green as I have heard from a work colleague who used to live there that in the summer (there are quite a few village pubs off the green) it can get a bit noisy. I think its just because families take their kids out on the green and its the kind of place where peope take their dogs for walks and stop for a half on the way back - not rowdy as in groups of youths. Hope this helps, I just know this end.

Yes I can vouch for Sedgefield, its very nice there. It has a nice park (at least it used to) called Hardwick Park and it was just on the outskirts of Sedgefield. It has a few shops, not big superstores but a row of shops consisting of bakers, butchers, post office etc etc, It used to have a co-op dont know if thats still there. Sedgefield also has a car boot sale on sundays and of course Sedgefield Races :D

I knew there was one of the Trimdons which was a nice place to live but wasnt sure which one. Theres Trimdon, Trimdon Grange and the one you mentioned Trimdon Village and again I beleive they hae a handful of shops (cant vouch for that though).

Edit to add : Sedgefield also has George Bolams for meat. It sells meat, veggies, cooked meats etc etc and has many bargains. Especially the steakburgers, I love them and I think they work out at about 20p each or something like that. Its quite a big shop on the outskirts of Sedgefield.

Theres Trimdom station too, tbh all the trimdoms are much better than they used to be. Ex moved to Trimdon Station when he left us, lived there for about 2 years and never had any problems.

Theres also Chilton, a bit further away (about 35 mins drive) but my SIL has lived in Chilton for 20 years and loves it. Another place a bit closer but with very easy access would be Shincliffe. It's just 4 miles from Durham City centre, has a very popular infant school (really little village school) and 20 mins from Peterlee on a very direct route. Shincliffe is close to where I live, and I have always wanted to live there but the houses have always been out of my price range...then again I do live in council house lol.
  • Hi, I grew up and lived in Peterlee for about 25 years so know the place like the back of my hand.

The town centre is not a very desirable place (although a lot of work has been done to improve this) the further out you get the better it is. - I used to live on Oakerside which is a private estate, just off the A19 which was developed about 25 years ago - there are some very nice houses there. - Reasonably priced too.

Alternative places to live are Shotton, Easington Village or Castle Eden - I think house prices are slightly higher here.

One benefit of Peterlee is that the A19 is easily accessible and its 25 mins to Middlesbrough and about 30 mins to Newcastle.

The old saying goes - Peterlee is the Place to Be.

PM me if you want more info about the area.

Peterlee is no better or worse than anywhere else probably.
Most towns have there good areas and there bad areas.

The town centre isn't up to much, not many shops and only a couple of places to eat. Also it does look quite dull and dreary.

Oakerside is definately one of the nicer areas - only a half hour walk from the A19 (where all of the industrial estates - and most of the jobs are!)
Close to the dene so nice walks can be had.
Quiet area, except children playing on weekends. And birds :)

The best Indian restaurant in the world nearby!!
    Along with a pub.
    What more could you need?

Well for those not as easy to satisfy there is some sort of youth club, corner shop and a hairdresser too! :D

Some parts of Peterlee are not at all pleasant and there are so undesirable people about - but like I said earlier every town is the same to some point really.

House prices - in Oakerside you would be looking at approx £80K for a 2 bedroom flat and approx £115K for a 3 bed house.

Hope this helps you out a little.

    :)
