Hi All,
I am thinking about taking a job near Peterlee, County Durham and wanted to know any info that you may have if you live in that region?
House prices, places to live etc?
Any info is much appreciated - Cheers

Hi I live about ten mins away from peterlee in a little village. My husband worked there until recently. I think this area is nice persoanlly - I myself have not been born and bred here though - we bought a house here a few years ago. I have to say Peterlee itself isnt the nicest place. Its quite dreary and depressing, but if you ask someone who actually lives in the town they may feel different. It has shops, Asda etc but it is a typical deprived north east town. There is however a lot of regeneration going on in County Durham so with regards to house prices you could find a bargain. I would work there but personally I wouldnt live there. I dont know about crime but it doesnt have the best reputation. If I were you I would work there but try and live in one of the southern area villages - avoid the northern ones. Though many places have brand new housing estates they arer still poor ex-mining towns struggling by.
Which town are you thinking of working?0 -
I agree with what Lucy has said in that it does have a bit of a reputation but I presume Peterlee like any other place also has some nice areas.
If I remember correctly the area is full of council houses with flat roofs (Im sure it used to be ).
Theres a couple of members who live in the Durham area so I shall bump this up again later on and hopefully they will see this thread.0 -
Hi Middleman. I live 10 miles from Peterlee, it takes about 20 mins to get there from where I live and a fair few people in my village work there as it's a pretty direct route. House prices are quite reasonable compared to the rest of the uk (a 3 bed semi is about £100,000 round here), and the area I live in is getting a lot of new houses built at the moment.
I don't know if you have kids but there are some really good schools in the Durham area too, the school my dd goes to consistently gets great GCSE results and has THE best six form results out of all the schools in the area, including the private ones!0 -
*Bumping thread like i said I would*
I personally would think about moving to surrounding villages, theres many nice ones in that area but id be inclined to keep out of Peterlee itself (sorry if someone reading lives there im just going by what ive heard about Peterlee)
You could always move to doggy
Doggy is slang for West Cornforth.......but that might be just as bad as Peterlee :rotfl: :rotfl:
ok, i'll shut up now0 -

lol no you are right it's not the poshest place in durham, it's is better than it used to be though.
Where I live has a bit of a bad reputation too but it's quite unfounded these days it's one of the nicest places I've ever lived. I feel really safe here, I'm happy to let my dd go out after dark, I can go out and leave my windows open in the summer without any real worry I'll be burgled. Then again I did grow up in inner-city Liverpool lol0 -
Hi Folks,
Thanks for the info.
I am not sure where to live only know that I will be working in Peter lee.
Currently have a 2 week old son and finance who wont be relocating with me straight away.
If I was to rent in the area and travel to work say up to 30 mins travel where would you suggest and can you recommend any companies that offer house rental?
Cheers for all your help so far....To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness.0 -
I have recently moved to Seaham, a small town just north of Peterlee which is rated as an up and coming area, and which is currently undergoing a lot of re-development. There is a brand new shopping mall just about to open, and it is right on the coast - you could consider here. Here is a link to a website about Seaham http://www.visionwebsites.co.uk/Contents/Text/Index.asp?SiteId=571&SiteExtra=15511951&TopNavId=599&NavSideId=6447
There is a local lettings agent which serves this part of the north east http://www.interlet-north.co.uk/ . My daughter and her fiance rented with them until they bought a bungalow last year.
Although Peterlee is a fairly ordinary place, there are lots of nice areas around here, and property costs are much lower than many other parts of the country (I originally came from Southampton, but have lived in the NE for over 30 years, but still have faily down there so I know how much difference there is in prices0 -
Hi, cant really reccomend anywhere to live but just had a look on www.adtrader.co.uk and its came up with lots of property rentals (private ad may be cheaper than estate agents)
hopefully people more local to Durham can advise you further.0
