Recommendations for green manure

Is it too late in the year to sow seeds for green manure on a small veg patch?

I know they did it on the tv a few weeks ago. They used mustard seeds?

Anyone got any other things they use for green manure?

I bought some mustard seeds the other day and have decided that it is worth sowing them despite the packet saying sow up until September. I have done it this morning as it is such a beautiful day.

I have found Phacelia is the best for very quick coverage but it may be too late to sow now. Mine came up in a week and had covered the bed in about four weeks. Broadcast sowing seems to work best. If you are just looking for a coverage for bare earth you could always try a layer of autumn leaves if you have any available. I just gather armfuls from the local park, fill up bin bags and take to the allotment.

Where is the best place to buy green manure from? Is there any good ones for a shady area?

I bought mine from Alchemilla's Garden
She has a site on ebay and has some for sale at the moment.
