From the info given this is not picking up a job and moving it somewhere else.

This it what was posted(quoted in post 2) hidden in all that location stuff.
There are no suitable office spaces for me to work from at that office. This will mean that I end up doing work that is not in my contract, and is of a lower position.

From the other posts it reads like the current job(service only the OP provides) is not moving to the new office but getting shut down and they are being offered a suitable alternative.

Just because an employer says it's the same job doing other stuff does not make it the same job.

No, I'm pretty sure that you have misread that. They are picking up the role and moving it. But by locating it in another office, in the nature of things, "other stuff" will also end up on the OPs plate, simply because of their location in "an unsuitable office". If you read the totality of the posts, the OP refers to not being able to do the current job from home due to the type of work it is; the fact that it's a government regulated role that is necessary and there is nobody else doing it; and in the OP they are very clear that they are relocating the office, not making the role redundant.

they said that is what their employer told them, that does not make it true.
I have been told that Voluntary redundancy is not an option as they said that the location is being made redundant but not my role

OP is saying they can't do their current job at the new location and won't be.

You say your employer doesn't offer home working, however you are in a office of one. Perhaps discuss with your employer having a home office. They could contribute to fixing a room up, supplying the furniture. I even know of someone that had a home office built in the garden at employers expense - cheaper than leasing/managing an office just for them.

You could mention you don't know if you'll be able to make the move if they don't (not in an ultimatum way) and say you want to work with them to find a way of making it work.

I guess if you are being moved to a larger office with more people then it is a more difficult case to argue.

I still say you are reading more into it than is actually happening, or has been said. But until the OP comes back with more information to confirm this, we can argue this until the cows come home. What they are saying is commonplace in their working environment, and if we are going to question whether the employer is telling the truth about redundancy, then we could also question the OP about what on earth makes an office "unsuitable" for office work! I do know what they mean by that. And I doubt it will wash as an excuse. It's been tried too often. Without success.
  • Thanks for everyone's advice and comments. Here's an update.

As expected the Council Committee did decide to close my office and the options offered were not suitable for me, mainly due to distance and childcare commitments, and the work would change to more admin support rather than my actual role. As previously explained, home working is not an option due to the nature of my role. I work as a registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

After 9 years I have handed my resignation in. I felt like I had no other option. It has been a really hard few months and a really hard decision to come to, one that has made me quite sad but my family has to come first and in this situation, the alternatives wouldn't have worked for us.

You never know whats around the corner, good and bad. My little one is only 4 and they grow up so quickly, so going to take some time now to be there when she needs me, without excess travel around the County.

Thanks once again or all your comments and advice, it has been appreciated.

    Mrs Muffin.
