hi,
My sister has home and contents insurance with Direct Line.
Her renewal shows an increase of £50 on her premium, so she would like to shop around. However DL are saying that they will charge a cancellation fee of £42 if she doesn't renew.
Surely she hasn't broken any contracts, and is not wanting to leave early as she has been with them for several years?
Can anyone advise if this is legal and / or enforceable please?

Maybe she spoke to them and asked about "cancelling" her policy??
If so they may have quoted their cancellation fee
In fact she wants to "lapse" the policy when it ends
There's no charge for that0 -
I will check with her, but he said that the cancellation fee was mentioned in the renewal quote letter.
prior to that she hadn't spoken to them since renewing last year.Jack of all trades ... Master of none

Yes, there is a fee for "cancelling" a policy. Good of them to underline that.
It will also be set out in the policy docs
But as #4 above, there is no fee for letting a policy "lapse"!0 -
Just renewed mine with DL, it states that there is a fee of £43.68 to cancel the policy, there is no fee if not wishing to renew when renewal is due.0

Cancelling is different to not renewing.
She needs to tell them that she is not going to renew that policy at renewal.
She must not say she wants to cancel the policy.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
