Soil prep before turf

Is there an easier way of preparing soil for laying turf other than "heeling" it?
I did this year's ago and it took absolutely ages and was really hard on the legs.

Depends on area, do you have access to a roller? The heeling in is a substitute for rolling

Maybe a large plank with ropes? lay plank on ground, stand on it, move plank, rinse & repeat until area is completed

If you can rent a roller, it will make life easier. I generally do it three times over the period of a couple of weeks. I find that after the first roll, the soil can bulge or dip a little.

Its the heel - sideslide - heel action that both compacts and levels any small imperfections in the levels.
