Thanks for all your links, I have seen many of your travels over the years on here, so will have a good look through. I was just looking at Phu Quoc, but all the connections may make it a step too far if we also visited Siem Reap. I don't mind connecting in Amsterdam, then 1 more place - Bangkok/KL are both easy routes with lots of flights - then an internal flight/drive to anther location.

We've done that via Schipol, flying to and from Jakarta with Garuda, and vowed never to ever go near that airport ever again.

It must be one of the wettest airports in the world, the rain was even coming through the roof in the Gate lounge in several places.

Coming back we had to disembark at Schipol, and reboard. I had a pair of shorts on and a T-shirt, and took my bottle of water with me. We went straight from the aircraft to the Boarding Gate. Had to go through a security desk, despite the fact we'd got straight off an aircraft that we would soon be reboarding, and that I was in shorts and T-shirt, I got a full frisk job by a Dutch thug, and had my bottle of water taken off me. Hate the place.

South America recommendations ? Hmm, probably I'd take a look at the web sites of the specialist travel agents, perhaps "Journey Latin America" for ideas. It won't be a problem to include an idyllic beach and they exist aplenty. Lonely Planet web site. Those two will lead to others.

    What sort of holiday ?

Peru; must see Macchu Picchu, condors in Colca Canyon, Arequipa is impressive, shrunken heads in museum if you are brave, talk to Quecha for the braver and a real eye opener.

Chile; capital Santiago is a must, winery good for relaxing days, night sky in the Atacama desert absolutely amazing. Or South for walking in Patagonia, ship around the Horn penguin spotting in the fjords.

Ecuador for the animals, Charles Darwin style.

Colombia for the coffee growing area, maybe colonial Cartagena.

I'll guess Brazil has the best known beaches but Brazil is still on my "to do" list. Eating guinea pig in Bolivia will remain there, on that "to do" list :)

After making several postings in this thread it's just dawned on me that we're off on a long haul to the Eastern Caribbean on 27 October, onboard MARELLA EXPLORER, 15 nights of Adult Only AI indulgence

Starting with a flight to Palma. Calling at Cartagena, Malaga, Cadiz, out through the Straits of Gibraltar to Funchal. Then 6 nights at sea to Antigua, St Lucia, Grenada, and finally Barbados to fly home by Thomson Dreamliner.

Wow, that sounds amazing Pompey Pete, but boats/cruises are a definite no for me! We did an amszing floatilla holiday last year as novices. Absolutely loved it, but had land vertigo for a full month when we got home. I've had it before after boat trips too, made me feel so awful.

Schipol is just a hop away from us in Norwich, not the best place to get stuck for hours though.

I'm busy looking Galle up, did any of the beaches look good for snorkelling? Or maybe too rough?

No idea about snorkelling as the sea by the Lighthouse was far too rough and there were cows on the beach as well :) We stayed by the pool and got entertained daily by the very very large Komodo Dragon that used to appear at the opposite side of the pool.

We're also going to Mauritius at the end of the year as that appears to be quite a good place for winter sun but it's not as cheap as some of the other places.

Malaysia is worth throwing into the mix too. Not as cheap as Vietnam or Cambodia but still good value (apart from the price of alcohol as it's a Muslim country) and without the tourist excesses of some parts of Thailand. I'm not a massive fan of Kuala Lumpur but the rest of the country is incredible with some of the best food I've had anywhere.

Agree with not ruling out Malaysia
  • Could recommend Costa Rica. Spent 3 weeks there in December. Deserted beaches. Temperatures in mid 20's. Flush western toilets, you can drink the tap water safely. Fantastic hot springs, amazing wildlife, zip wires. Due to its proximity to the USA (5 hours flight) high standards of food and accommodation and mostly English speaking
