renting cars\rooms without credit card

After briefly using credit cards and running up a bill of £16,000 I sent them back and replaced them with a Visa Electron.

I know work as a rep and increasingly I am having trouble booking hotel rooms and booking cars. Was recently left without a car in Krakow after the hire company suddenly refused to accept a debt card.

So anyone with a solution

Apply for a credit card and just be strict about not using it except for these types of purchases.

There's no way of getting round it. Many hotels and car hire companies simply *WON'T* accept a debit card. In such instances it's best keep a credit card as a backup!

It is a very recent thing, it was in February that I first had a problem. Since then hiring a card without a credit card has become harder and last week I had trouble with a hotel room.

Why is it that these companies are not accepting debit cards now

As riad says get a CC and be strict with it. I have a CC that I use purely for hotel/travel expenses that I can reclaim from my employer. It therefore gets paid off each month.

Thus speaks somebody who doesn't do much travelling on company business in strange towns/countries normally on a very tight time schedule.

    Take the bus!
The trams are better in Krakow, the busses are a bit ropey. Or was the bus an alternative for a hotel? Catch an all-night bus from Krakow to Warsaw to get a nights sleep!
Can you get a Company credit card?
  • I use an Abbey debit card that has VISA debit facility for this purpese, HTH
    Don't waste your words I don't need,

    I don't care where you've been or,

You're right there - just as I'm not daft enough to rack up £16000 in credit card debts.

Ejones - Come on, there are worse crimes than running up debt. Murder, robbery, watching Bristol Rovers or having a picnic in a lay-by. And we don't want the busses full of slick suits all yelling 'I'm on a bus' into their mobiles!
  • Ejones, funny but that's why some new people get a bit narked on here sometimes!
arrow.gif Pls be nice to all MoneySavers. :money:

Anyways, in response to the OP, I don't think there is a way round it, hotels usually take the credit card details if you do a runner/ trash the place, then they have a way of getting the money back.

As someone else has said, I don't think there is a way around it. Perhaps you could get a card in association with your company, then you know if you run up stupid bills on it that you're in big trouble with the boss!
