    My attached garage is connected to my neighbors attached garage but this does not make our bungalows terraced or semidetached. As I asked previously just what did the planning department actually say.
    I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

    So a bit more info as requested!!!8230;
    Planning permission is NOT required as a loft conversion falls under permitted development. This according to both our architect and contractor is reason why its fine to start hence us asking if we are liable when we have advice from the 'experts'.


    The permission denied from our council is because they classed as a Terrace. A terrace house at the end of a run is only allowed 40m3 increase while a semi detached is allowed 50m3 increase.


    Our house and our neighbours are symmetrical in shape and our neighbour does not join roofs with his neighbour. They are also a different style and were built 4 years after the rest of the homes on our road. The only link is a garage (not sure if this is callused as official part wall, but it is touching) which falls back to Andy Mc's point above. So what constitutes an end of terrace or semi-detached in this situation, as it is still not clear as garnered by replies so far.


    Our survey and the survey from the previous owner all class our house as semi-detached. Answers to those who asked how can we not tell, hopefully that explains it.


    Currently we are appealing the refusal on grounds that our house is a semi and not end of terrace.

    Sounds like you have a semi, your neighbours is a semi too but linked to another. Hopefully they haven't built over their garages or it could be argued it's a terrace.

    Can you check the planning permission for your and your neighbour's houses?

    Were they described a semis or terraced when planning permission was applied for?

  • Not a secret and not difficult to picture. It's very similar to AndyMc's photo... Starting from my house, then neighbours house, recessed garage and then house (belonging to my neighbours neighbour)

  • As I said, it's like your picture. No building over garage.

    Today the council have ruled we ARE semi-detached!
