Replace fitted wardrobe doors

Hi,


We'd like to replace our fitted wardrobe doors, they were fitted about 15 years ago by Sharps and they are good quality, we just don't like them.


Is a company like Sharps (or similar) our only/best option? We don't want to modify the inside of the wardrobe, just the doors and a side chest of drawers which is attached to the wall/wardrobe and needs to be replaced (there's a problem with the carpet here as it goes round it but not sure how to fix this yet)


Would it be better finding a local carpenter to do this, would it be cheaper?

I'd speak to a local carpenter first for sure, at least get an idea of what can / may be more difficult to do. If the doors are standard size it would be possible for you to remove and replace too.

The carpenter would also be able to give you some idea on the chest of draws.

You could also get Sharps round to quote just to see what they would charge.

The problem is not the doors, it's the visible frame that attaches to the walls & ceiling (in the same colour). All of that has to be replaced, if it was just the doors we would consider doing it ourselves... the whole unit is completely bespoke and made to measure.






I'll get Sharps to come round, but I think it's going to be stupidly expensive...

Get a quote from Sharps and a couple from local carpenters - that way you have a comparison to make - I did have Hammonds round to quote on new wardrobes and nearly fell of my chair at their quotes. Fortunately I was more looking for design advise (of which the rep was able to offer precisely nothing) - made up my mind not to use them though.

Local joiner will fix that for you. If you're handy, you can get the doors online relatively cheaply and they often come with the rails. Cut the rails, screw down and you're away.

There are companies that advertise replacement kitchen doors. Most of these will do bedroom furniture also.

Thanks, but as I said it's not a matter of replacing the doors, that won't do as the whole frame would still be visible around them. Also it's normal doors, no rails (not possible to have rails with the chest of drawers as it is)

Companies like Sharps would have you believe that you are getting custom built wardrobes, in reality, as it is with kitchens they are set sizes and the custom appearance comes from the flashing of their units into the existing frame work. The pieces you are talking about are just panels scribed to fit your room. A carpenter will be able to replicate this without issue

Sharps quote is £3800... this is a lot of money for us so looking into alternatives now. I'm planning to ask a local joiner but I think the chest of drawers is a problem because removing it means putting new carpet on the bedroom which is not going to be cheap either, and I'm not sure if a joiner can replicate it exactly the same size so the carpet can stay and and much cheaper?

A good joiner/cabinet maker should be able to make something the exact size you want. Can't see any problem with that at all.
