E:30/11 Win Morecambe And Wise Christmas Specials On DVD

At one time Morecambe & Wise were as much a part of Christmas television as the Queen's speech. Their Christmas specials became such an institution during the 1970’s that few British families would dare to miss them. The 1977 Christmas Special still holds the record for the largest audience of any British TV show with an astonishing 28 million viewers, around half of the total UK population at that time, tuning in.
Loveable, pompous Little Ern with his hairy legs and toupee and anarchistic Eric inspired generations of comics and had celebrities queuing up to appear with them. Their Christmas shows perfectly blended side-splitting sketches, spoof Shakespearean plays and hilariously stage-managed stars with Shirley Bassey, Elton John and Michael Parkinson being just a few of their victims.
From 1969 until 1980 the shows were always on Christmas Day. The most memorable sketches often revolve around the guest stars; who can forget Andre Previn’s (referred to as "Andrew Preview or Privet") appearance in 1971. This famous sketch shows Eric attempting to play Edward Grieg's Piano Concerto and reducing Previn to exasperation with his jerky, out-of-tempo playing. When Previn announces Eric is playing all the wrong notes, Eric responds by seizing Previn’s jacket lapels and uttering the classic line "I'm playing all the right notes... but not necessarily in the right order." A line still used today by musicians faced with critical conductors.

This 3-disc compilation includes 8 Christmas Specials from 1969-1977. The perfect accompaniment to Christmas, Morecambe and Wise: The Complete Christmas Specials is available on DVD from 12th November. RRP £29.99
