46 years ago, we had some help in buying our house (cash wedding gift from both sets of parents), but we cut back on the wedding as the deposit etc would take nearly all our savings.

We cut back on relatives (what's the point of inviting those you haven't seen for 10 years), I made the bridesmaids' dresses, my dress was shop soiled, but was very cheap even after a specialist wedding dress dry clean, rings were bought in a sale, the reception was in a hired hall, using outside caterers and we economised by having monochrome photos (when colour ws at least 3 times as expensive). The only other full price items were the flowers, cars, church and fees (husband's suit being his birthday gift from his mum). The honeymoon was a last minute deal in a 'private hotel' in Llandudno. (no expensive in those days, foreign trips)

This way,we bought a new 3 piece suite, bed, bedroom suite, carpets and curtains(only in the one bedroom to be used at that time).

We got married in a registry office, we did the house up before we got married so all our money went on that. I had a fabulous house and do not regret not having a big wedding but we had a lovely honeymoon in Austria too.

This was in 1971 and we are still together.
  • We eloped. Didn't want the fuss for one day when it ends up being about everything and everyone else. Best choice ever. I agree with a precious poster who mentioned the best weddings being the simple ones. By that depends on you both and preferences. Good luck!

Ps if avoid the credit card option especially if they take debt into consideration when applying for a mortgage

One of the worst weddings I went to cost about £25K, although that figure did include groom's stag trip abroad.

I have to admit I went to a wedding that cost £100k+ and it was the best wedding I have ever been too! (They could easily afford it so why not!)
