Another HB question!

Hi there
I have put in previous post I am considering moving to a different local authority so would have to cancel my claim and put new one in with new local authority.
I am currently paid HB 2 weeks in arrears. If I moved on 31 Aug would my HB be paid up to that date - ie, would still get a payment in Sept as paid in arrears? Also is there a 4 week roll on period where you get paid 4 weeks after your claim is cancelled or is that tax credits?
Many thanks

You will be paid to the following Sunday after you vacate.
There is a 4 week payment on 2 homes if there is an unavoidable overlap between tenancies.
You have got to have moved and there is still liability to pay rent on your old property.
The 28 days starts from when you accept the new tenancy.
ie. Accept tenancy on 1st to start on 7th.
Move 7th
HB starts at new home 7th.
28 day payment on 2 homes starts 1st (date accepted new tenancy) but will only start from 7th to 28th (3 weeks) as still resident in old address.I enjoy flower arranging, kittens, devil worship, the study of serial killers and their methods and road kill jigsaws.0 -
If you are moving you must check whether your new post code is in a full service Universal Credit area
https://ucpostcode.entitledto.co.uk/ucdate
If it is you cannot claim Housing Benefit, any help with rent will only be available through Universal Credit. If you claim Universal Credit this will end any other benefits you are getting such as JDSA, ESA and Tax Credits.
Use the calculator here https://www.entitledto.co.uk to see how this might affect you.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0 -

Thank you AfraidofKittens. If I were to take the new property it needs repainting before I move in so would have to pay rent on the two properties at the same time. So say if I signed the tenancy agreement to start on 1st Sept but did not officially move out of my current home until 7th Sept would the 4week payment apply? Also the new property is in a new local authority so would have to put in a new claim with them. Would it be the old local authority making the 4 week payment?
Sorry I just want to make sure I am understanding it right! I appreciate your help.0 -

Thank you Calcotti. I have checked and Wakefield where I would be moving to becomes full service UC after 28 November 2018. I have put my details in entitled to and according to that it says I will be £11 per week better off on UC. This would be great but have heard lots of horror stories about people waiting ages for payment. I could manage 6 weeks but more than that and I would struggle.0 -

If your tenancy started on the 1st at the new property but you didn't move in until the 7th then you would lose the first weeks HB at the new property, If you had an unavoidable overlap where you had to give notice on the old property then the 4 weeks start from when you accepted and signed the new tenancy.
The overlap needs to be claimed at your current local authority - phone and speak to a Housing Benefit Officer and ask for a claim form.I enjoy flower arranging, kittens, devil worship, the study of serial killers and their methods and road kill jigsaws.0 -
in short - HB/UC housing element would start from the day you move into your new property, not from the tenancy start date. it is very rare that UC/HB will pay from move in date - only in exceptional circumstances, and painting/decorating is not one of them unfortunately
It is possible to claim HB on two properties, so you need to apply for the notice period on your old property to be paid to the tenancy end date.
the 4 week run on you mention applies to HB when you have claimed for longer than 6 months, and are no longer able to claim ie going from JSA/ESA to full time employment. This is not guaranteed, and needs to be applied for. it will not apply to in this case. you need to do an application for overlap with your current LA0
