    I see. Would it be better to reinstall the grippers on top of the hardboard, to avoid such problems?

    Yes, but if you're just talking about those two spots in the photos filling it would save a lot of effort.

    Stop talking about 'hardboard' you need to use 3mm ply as stated before.
    Hardboard with just disintegrate if it gets wet or damp.

    Could you just take the damaged chipboard up and relay it with the damaged edges underneath or at the edge of the landing where they won't see any traffic anyway?
