Yep entry to the museum is free and it is well worth visiting even for non-spotters. The only charge is £6 for the Norwich Union Wheel - a mini London Eye. Even my mum liked the museum and she really loved the royal carriages section.

I too made the mistake of parking in the £7 car park. They have to keep prices high to deter commuters/train commuters. We arrived at 2.30pm and left at 5pm so it would have been cheaper to park in the train station car park across the road from the NRM as you can buy cheaper tickets. The irony wasn't lost on me when I was going around on the wheel eyeing up all the free spaces in the cheaper car park!

next time we go, i think DH can leave the car with me at the designer outlet and he can get the park n ride! it's ridiculous. they were only in the museum for about an hour or so.

I was going to suggest using Park & Ride till I remembered you were going on the train! :o Car parking charges in York are outrageous.

Additionally you would be better using the Rawcliffe P&R for the NRM ......
