Test Drive - NI number and Licence?

Hi - haven't bought a car in 8 years but thought it was about time I got a newer one.
Went to try out Landrover (main dealer) and just had a drive round - no details / ID nothing. Decided to change track and have been looking at Volvo - wanted to test drive over the weekend and was asked to bring Licence and also my NI number.
Can understand driving licence but have only ever needed NI number to hire a car.
Is NI number normal these days ?
