I have my bird feeding station in my border, but all the seeds are starting to grow when the fall to the ground. I can’t really put slabs down as I think it maybe a bit odd looking. Has anyone any ideas what I can do? I have suggested putting the pole on the lawn but other half is not keen.
Not to sure how to post photos on here when I’m using my phone

You can sterilise your seed by cooking it off in the oven on a low heat for 30mins it wont effect the nutrients in the seeds

That's interesting, never knew that, thank you

Will it still keep? I buy 25kg at a time and would like to sterilise a good quantity at a time.

If you out in the lawn you end up with the same growth amongst the grass. It becomes so thick you can't cut it with the lawnmower.

You can move it regularly so there is less accumulation at one spot.

In the border could you lay down some permeable membrane which would stop the seed taking root in the soil and could be removed.

We have a feeder over an area of gravel on permeable membrane and use weed killer when necessary but the birds eat most of what spills out.
May be feed them less so they eat what is on the ground

Or just offer something that doesn't leave the same unwanted leftovers - like sunflower hearts.

using them already, think the sunflowers must be coming from the seed mix. I do have wheat free seed

  • I'd put weed control fabric around the pole and lots of bark chippings on top. Some of the seeds will fall and sprout, but will be a lot easier to pick up if they're not rooted deeply. Works for me!
