Good afternoon all.
I have started a new job last Tuesday (Officially) however i HATE the job and already have been called an 'Idiot' by one of the staff members.
I have 3 other job interviews lined up...next week.
However i am on a probationary period for six months with my current job so what are my rights? Can i just hand in my notice and be allowed to complete my month which i must give them.
And to add a further cherry on the cake they want me to work 39 hours a week when i'm contracted to 20 lol.
I can't work 39 as i'm going back to Uni next month!
Please Advise On What I Can Do.

Were you being an idiot?
If you don't want to do 39 hours, refuse.
If you want to resign, resign.
I really don't understand the complexity?0 -
Well...no i wasn't being an idiot.
My question is can they fire me on the spot for handing in my notice during my probationary period?0 -

Right, so you've clearly given it a decent trial period of less than 3 days.
Resign if you want to, don't resign if you don't want. What's the big deal?0 -
Have you asked if the increased hours are permanent or just to cover the next few weeks - it is the holiday period after all?0
-
They can fire you on the spot but they have to pay you statutory notice pay, which is normaly a week.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
What is the job?0

I was in your shoes kind of just under 2 weeks ago - left same day/immediate/no notice. I knew the 'I was late whilst ahem really getting another job' would never go down particularly well even if that is what you are meant to do (Never got paid for 6 days work mind so that was a different beast; perhaps I had wasted their time and I was mindful re-advertising might not have been cheap) I'm just so glad to not have to battle an awkward and uneven notice period in the future or continue to work upwards of 50 hours each week for £7.50 per hour that I feel no regrets in trusting my gut instinct by lunch time of first day which became a battle including day 5 when I was asked if I'd be there in another 5 years in front of everyone else when it suddenly become a terribly small company, until I saw the person who knew what I was signed up to as equivalent of 'guarantor' to the employment contract - you have better odds for getting another job then I did with 3 interviews lined up already - good luck and don't be guilt tripped, it is in no ones interests to stay in a job you can't handle/see yourself doing in cold light of reality or feeling uncomfortable each day even at such early period. And of course, I'm under no illusion that a company can turn the tables just as easily. "What! That's one weeks notice compared to the eight I'd need to give you"!!
There use to be advice (statutory notice guidance) on direct.gov that new employment in the first 4 weeks didn't require notice.
You may be asked for feedback. Leave with a clear conscience.0 -
If you're sure , and you can afford to , quit.
They might not want you to work any notice
Are you scheduled to work the days of your interviews ?0 -

I think what the OP is getting at is whether it's possible for him/ her to be fired subsequent to handing in his/ her notice and hence whether any subsequent reference could state that he/ she was fired or whether, once his/ her resignation has been submitted, any reference must state that he/ she resigned.
I don't know the answer, but I'm sure someone here does - it's an interesting question...!0
